I&#8217;d prefer not to guess which kind though!<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Mysterious Mississauga Butterflies<\/h2>\n<p>I have several field guides to help identify butterflies in Ontario. My current favourite is the <em><strong>ROM Field Guide to Butterflies of Ontario<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I also use several websites including<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/15740\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>BugGuide.net<\/strong><\/a>;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.butterfliesandmoths.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Butterflies and Moths of North America.org<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nand<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariobutterflies.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ontario Butterflies<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Two other websites, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-butterfly.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>e-Butterfly.org<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inaturalist.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>iNaturalist.org<\/strong><\/a> are also useful but more for reporting butterflies than for identifying them.<\/p>\n<h2>The Jigsaw Puzzle of Butterfly ID<\/h2>\n<p>Identifying some butterflies is easy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/MonarchRattrayMarshMississaugaONCanada20161003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5883\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/MonarchRattrayMarshMississaugaONCanada20161003.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Monarch Rattray Marsh Mississauga on NaturalCrooksDotCom\" width=\"447\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/MonarchRattrayMarshMississaugaONCanada20161003.jpg 600w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/MonarchRattrayMarshMississaugaONCanada20161003-200x189.jpg 200w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/MonarchRattrayMarshMississaugaONCanada20161003-400x378.jpg 400w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/MonarchRattrayMarshMississaugaONCanada20161003-317x300.jpg 317w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 447px) 100vw, 447px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>A Monarch<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For example, there are only two big butterflies common locally that look like a Monarch: a Monarch and a Viceroy. I&#8217;m talking about you Northern Broken-dash, Tawny-edged Skipper and your look-alikes.<\/p>\n<p>If you get just the right view, for example the underside of the wings of a Peck&#8217;s Skipper, the id can be straight forward.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/pecks.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8467\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/pecks.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Pecks Skipper on NaturalCrooksDotCom\" width=\"880\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/pecks.jpg 880w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/pecks-172x200.jpg 172w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/pecks-768x894.jpg 768w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/pecks-344x400.jpg 344w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/pecks-258x300.jpg 258w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>In my Mississauga neighbourhood, only a Peck&#8217;s skipper has this pale yellow vaguely capital H shaped mark on its underwing. Luckily, it was guarding a territory and landed many times showing me lots of different views and angles.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s when the Jigsaw Puzzle fun comes in.<\/p>\n<p>I search for photos that match the angle of my own. I compare the marks. I hem and haw and twist my mind in knots trying to figure it out.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I have to give up. Other times I get the id wrong. But I find the puzzle fun and rewarding.<\/p>\n<h2>Remember the Common Butterfly Is the More Likely Butterfly<\/h2>\n<p>I won&#8217;t admit how many times I have tried to imagine the butterfly I saw was a rare migrant or an endangered species. It was a very special day for me and I know who to thank for it!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t stop me looking and hoping though. Someone found a migrant Funereal Duskywing in Toronto last year.
