It wasn&#8217;t till I walked along the entire path beside Lake Ontario that I met the males and confirmed that these were Common Goldeneye.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/common-goldeneye-ducks-arkendo-park-oakville\/paircommongoldeneyearkendoparkoakvillejanuary\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-772\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-772\" title=\"Pair Common Goldeneye Arkendo Park Oakville January on Natural Crooks Dot Com\" src=\"http:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/PairCommonGoldeneyeArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Pair Common Goldeneye Arkendo Park Oakville January\" width=\"550\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/PairCommonGoldeneyeArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary.jpg 550w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/PairCommonGoldeneyeArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary-200x120.jpg 200w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/PairCommonGoldeneyeArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary-400x240.jpg 400w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/PairCommonGoldeneyeArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary-500x300.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The male Common Goldeneye, besides the very obvious yellow-gold eyes, has a head that looks black until the sun catches the feathers. Then it shades into iridescent green. It&#8217;s not as brightly green as a mallard, but it still looks sharp.<\/p>\n<p>The females have quite an interesting two-toned beak. At first I thought I was imagining it, until I realized that ALL of the females had that glowing patch of yellow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/common-goldeneye-ducks-arkendo-park-oakville\/commongoldeneyepairarkendoparkoakvillejanuary\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-770\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-770\" title=\"Common Goldeneye Pair Arkendo Park Oakville January on Natural Crooks Dot Com\" src=\"http:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/CommonGoldeneyePairArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Common Goldeneye Pair Arkendo Park Oakville January\" width=\"550\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/CommonGoldeneyePairArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary.jpg 550w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/CommonGoldeneyePairArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary-200x153.jpg 200w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/CommonGoldeneyePairArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary-400x306.jpg 400w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/CommonGoldeneyePairArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary-391x300.jpg 391w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These ducks were diving steadily. A check at home of the information on the Cornell University site said that Common Goldeneye eat aquatic invertebrates. That didn&#8217;t exactly tell me what they were feeding on. So I checked a University of Michigan site. It said that although they eat aquatic insects during the breeding season, in the winter they more often live off of fish, crustaceans and mollusks. A bit more hunting around suggested that they will eat zebra mussels.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/common-goldeneye-ducks-arkendo-park-oakville\/goldeneyefemalearkendoparkoakvillejanuary\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-771\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-771\" title=\"Goldeneye Juvenile or Female Arkendo Park Oakville January on Natural Crooks Dot Com\" src=\"http:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/GoldeneyeFemaleArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Goldeneye Juvenile or Female Arkendo Park Oakville January\" width=\"571\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/GoldeneyeFemaleArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary.jpg 571w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/GoldeneyeFemaleArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary-200x123.jpg 200w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/GoldeneyeFemaleArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary-400x246.jpg 400w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/GoldeneyeFemaleArkendoParkOakvilleJanuary-486x300.jpg 486w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 571px) 100vw, 571px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also discovered at home that the immature ducks look somewhat like the females.
