I tried to coax them to feed from my hand on some peanuts, which the Black Capped Chickadees were quick to enjoy, but the Nuthatches weren\u2019t interested.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WhiteBreastedNuthatchonNaturalCrooksDotComLow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2410\" alt=\"Photo of White Breasted Nuthatch on NaturalCrooksDotCom\" src=\"http:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WhiteBreastedNuthatchonNaturalCrooksDotComLow-400x270.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WhiteBreastedNuthatchonNaturalCrooksDotComLow-400x270.jpg 400w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WhiteBreastedNuthatchonNaturalCrooksDotComLow-200x135.jpg 200w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WhiteBreastedNuthatchonNaturalCrooksDotComLow-444x300.jpg 444w, https:\/\/naturalcrooks.com\/rambles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WhiteBreastedNuthatchonNaturalCrooksDotComLow.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>White Breasted Nuthatch<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Someone had filled the feeder relatively recently and the Nuthatches (and some of the Chickadees) were taking advantage of this windfall. They weren\u2019t eating the seeds, though. The theory is that someone called the birds Nuthatches after watching them hide the seeds. Personally, I doubt anyone could confuse jamming a sunflower seed into a tree trunk with brooding a nestful of eggs. I\u2019m not convinced.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hww.ca\/en\/species\/birds\/red-breasted-nuthatch.html\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Hinterland Who\u2019s Who<\/strong><\/a> says the name originally was nut-hack. If so, that might make more sense.<\/p>\n<p>At least the Red and White Breasted part of their names makes sense.
